Operating the Davud-i Kayseri School for Quran Memorization for Uyghur Children in Turkey

Introduction

This project, presented by the Al-Fatih Foundation for Educational and Health Services, aims to support the operation of the Davud-i Kayseri School in Kayseri, Turkey. This school, established by the Turkish Ministry of Awqaf and supervised by the Davud-i Kayseri Uyghur Association, accommodates about 250 Uyghur boys and girls aged 4 to 14. Most of these children are orphans or have lost their fathers due to persecution in China.

Main Goal

To preserve the Islamic identity of Uyghur refugee children in Turkey, and to provide them with religious education and Quran memorization.

Project Justification

This project comes in response to the difficult conditions faced by Uyghur Muslims in East Turkestan (Xinjiang), where they are subjected to severe persecution by the Chinese regime. Tens of thousands have sought refuge in Turkey and live in conditions that require support to preserve their religion and culture. The school currently relies on unstable individual donations, which affects the educational process.

Main Activities

The project aims to cover the school's operational costs, including:

  • Salaries for 12 male and female Quran teachers, in addition to a driver, a worker, and a school supervisor.
  • Providing stationery and office supplies.

Covering the costs of basic utilities such as water, electricity, and heating

Expected Outcomes

  • Graduating 25 children who have memorized the entire Quran annually.
  • Teaching children the Arabic language and Islamic education.
  • Qualifying children to enroll in Imam and Khatib schools.

Beneficiaries

The direct beneficiaries are 250 Uyghur refugee boys and girls in Kayseri, in addition to their families and the wider Turkestani community in Turkey.

Budget

The estimated annual cost to operate the school is $92,400 USD.

Project Management

The Al-Fatih Foundation will appoint a project coordinator to follow up on the school's progress, oversee monthly reports on children's development, meal quality, staff attendance, and salary disbursement.

Risks

The main risks include irregular salaries for the teachers, inconsistent transportation for the children, and a lack of heating in the winter. These risks will be mitigated by providing the necessary financial support to ensure the continuity of the educational process.
